Pub Review - Anchor Inn

Review

The Anchor Inn is a country pub and Bed and Breakfast situated right on the River Ouse in Barcombe, Lewes. The pub is located in the most beautiful countryside imaginable. It's the perfect pub for a summer day or evening with far-reaching views across the river and the South Downs.

The Inn rents out boats and it's possible to paddle two miles up the Ouse to the Isfield Falls (really a cascading weir). The river is full with fish and it's very relaxing to watch the carp rising as you sup on a lovely pint of Harveys.

There's a good selection of beers and wines (the owner is also a wine importer). My preference is for the bottled organic lager called Blonde, which is an exceptionally good deal at the pub.

The Anchor does a wide range of good food and has a small number of very nice rooms, providing bed and breakfast accommodation. If I didn't live so close to the pub, I'd be renting out the rooms for a weekend and spending my time fishing, boating, swimming, drinking and eating!

The pub has live bands on weekday nights during the winter and hosts weddings and other events in the function rooms and marquee.

The only problem with this pub is that it can get very crowded on long hot summer weekend days and the wait for food can be quite long. Visiting the pub on a weekday or any evening is generally preferable.
